A beautiful mind.

Just recently (and at last), BTL&rsquo;s EXOMIND has arrived in Malaysia. Since its launch last year, I&rsquo;ve been coming across reviews about how it helps with running thoughts, foggy brain and late nights. So, partly out of curiosity and partly because this job means keeping up with wellness innovations, I didn&rsquo;t take long to book a session and see what it could actually do for me. Spoiler: I walked out with a very different understanding of what it does.&nbsp;

What is EXOMIND? EXOMIND is a new FDA-approved, non-invasive device designed to support mental well-being. &ldquo;Essentially, it gives us calm, clarity and control,&rdquo; said Nadzri Mokhtar. It builds on the established science of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a recognised therapy that has been used for over 40 years to help manage conditions like drug-resistant major depressive disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders. &ldquo;These clinical protocols are usually more intense and require frequent sessions,&rdquo; he shared. &ldquo;EXOMIND, on the other hand, uses electromagnetic pulses for a more comfortable and accessible experience for those seeking relief and improvement.&rdquo;

Why EXOMIND? Think of it like rewiring the brain. EXOMIND targets the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is not only responsible for our emotional regulation and anxiety management, but also for cognitive functions such as memory, attention, planning, decision-making and reward processing. &ldquo;By encouraging neuron communications in this area, EXOMIND realigns our logic, emotion and action,&rdquo; Dr Nadzri explained. He added that it supports the balance of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine too. &ldquo;They are the brain&rsquo;s little messengers that tell us how to feel, think, and act. Keeping them in a good balance helps us make healthy choices in life.&rdquo;&nbsp;
When asked who would benefit most from EXOMIND, Dr Nadzri was quick to clarify that it&rsquo;s not meant for clinical-level disorders. Instead, it&rsquo;s more for those of us who are simply trying to keep up with life. He pointed to overstimulation, doomscrolling, impulsive shopping, reassurance-seeking and binge-drinking &mdash; interestingly, patterns many of us recognise in ourselves, casually talk about, but also conveniently ignore.

What happens during EXOMIND? Just like any other wellness therapy, EXOMIND started with a consultation and assessment so that doctor can get an understanding of where I was at and track the progress over time. Dr Nadzhir told me that each session takes around 24 minutes, and he usually recommends four to six sessions, spaced about five days apart, to achieve a lasting result. 
After removing the jewellery I was wearing near my head and confirming there were no metallic or electronic implants in that area, I settled onto the treatment bed, with my arms resting at the side, palms facing up. Dr Nadzhir then gently positioned the applicator against my head and told me that first we needed to identify my motor threshold. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll start with weaker pulses and slowly increase in strength until I see a small involuntary movement, like a twitch,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;Once we&rsquo;ve got that, we can begin the session.&rdquo;
During the treatment, I could feel a tapping sensation over the targeted area, and that was pretty much it. There was no discomfort at all. The 20 minutes also went by faster than expected. I usually get a little restless in such a situation where I&rsquo;m separated from my device. But this time, my digital dependency didn&rsquo;t surface, surprisingly.

What comes after EXOMIND? According to Dr Nadzhir, post-treatment reactions can differ from person to person as everyone has a different emotional journey and way of coping. &ldquo;And I wouldn&rsquo;t really call them side effects,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s more about people processing their emotions and thoughts, and that&rsquo;s reflected in their sleep, energy levels, mood and performance.&rdquo; He also noted that committing to healthy everyday choices and even having a bedtime ritual can positively influence the treatment results.&nbsp;

The Takeaway After my session in the morning, I went back to the office and noticed less procrastination when starting tasks and with communications. And before bed, I didn&rsquo;t feel as glued to my screen or doomscrolling as a way to wind down.&nbsp;
To be honest, I was only wondering if EXOMIND could help me sleep a little better and quiet down my overactive thoughts. But the conversation with the doctor made it click that having a healthy, calm mind isn&rsquo;t just about feeling &ldquo;less busy or stressed&rdquo;, it really affects how I show up everywhere else. Kind of like that moment you realise they&rsquo;re right&hellip; Working out is actually good for you.&nbsp;
