11 new movies and TV shows to stream this December 2020

After countless months of staying home and binge-watching movies and TV shows like there's no tomorrow, many people are closing in on the end of their Netflix queue.

Luckily, the major streaming services — Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video — have you covered with all new titles to keep you entertained between rounds of egg nog this holiday season.

So before you post up on the couch for yet another rewatch of Grey's Anatomy (all 16 seasons of it), stream one of these 11 new TV shows and movies dropping in December 2020.

The Hardy Boys

In the same vein as the CW's Riverdale and Nancy Drew, Hulu's new TV adaptation of the beloved books series The Hardy Boys takes a darker approach to wholesome source material.

The series, which some have compared to shows like True Detective, follows Frank and Joe Hardy as they spend the summer in Bridgeport uncovering the truth about the townspeople.

Selena: The Series

In the highly anticipated Selena biopic, Christian Serratos stars as the late singer as she grows from a young Mexican-American girl growing up in Texas to the "Queen of Tejano music."


Selena: The Series is available on Netflix.

Sound Of Metal

In Sound of Metal, Riz Ahmed stars as a rock drummer and recovering drug addict Ruben. As his hearing begins to fade, Ruben struggles with the idea of losing his music.

However, when a friend introduces Ruben to other members of the hearing-impaired community, he begins accept his new normal.

David Fincher's Mank tells the story of Orson Welles collaborator Herman J. Mankiewicz as he writes Ctizen Kane, and the trials and tribulations of its production thereafter.

Gary Oldman stars as the titular screenwriter opposite Amanda Seyfriend as actress Marion Davies. The film also includes Lily Collins as Mankiewicz's secretary Rita Alexander, who inspires the name of Davies' character Susan Alexander Kane in Citizen Kane.

When her creditability as a godmother is called into question, a young fairy godmother-in-training (Jillian Bell) agrees to help a Boston news anchor (Isla Fisher) whose childhood wish never came true.


For some wholesome holiday comedy, stream Godmothered on Disney+.


While fans will have to wait until at least 2021 for a second season for Euphoria, HBO revealed that two special episodes will be released in the meantime.

The first is set to premiere December 6 on HBO and HBO Max. Following the season one finale cliffhanger, the new episode, titled "Trouble Don't Last Always," will depict Rue (Zendaya) as she spends Christmas with her family.

Alice in Borderland

Adapted from the popular Japanese manga series, the live-action Alice in Borderland series follows three friends as they work together to survive after becoming trapped in an alternate universe.

The show premieres on Netflix.

The Prom

Ryan Murphy is back with a new movie-musical that will have you singing, dancing, and probably crying. After the head of the PTA bars Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman) from attending the prom with her girlfriend, four stage actors experiencing career lows pack up and head to Indiana to help Emma for a bout of good press.

Even though they fail to get the attention they wanted, they nevertheless do whatever it takes to give Emma the prom she deserves.

Catch The Prom and its star-studded cast (including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, James Corden, Kerry Washington, and Keegan Michael Key) on Netflix.

The FRipper

The limited docuseries The Ripper, has arrived Netflix and it takes viewers through Yorkshire, England in the 1970s.

Almost a century after the serial killer Jack the Ripper terrorized London, British authorities struggle to capture Peter Sutcliffe, who was then known as the Yorkshire Ripper. 

Black Botton

Adapted from a play of the same name, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom stars Viola Davis as the titular character in 1920s Chicago.

The film also includes the late Chadwick Boseman in his final role following his death in August 2020. The movie takes place over the course of one afternoon in the recording studio. As the characters fight for creative control to solidify their futures, they must also reconcile with their pasts.

Three years after signing a multi-year deal with Netflix, Shondaland, Shonda Rhimes' production company, will release its first project under the streaming giant.

Bridgerton, a period drama that looks like a fusing of Downton Abbey and Gossip Girl, follows the ins and outs of London's high society.
