What makes a truly great hotel stay? Is it the design, the comfort, or something less tangible? At the Hong Kong Suite at Island Shangri-La Hong Kong, it&rsquo;s all of the above.

There&rsquo;s no pulse quite like that of Hong Kong; a city that moves at its own rhythm, where modern glass towers rise alongside old-school facades in quiet contrast. Yet, tucked within the island&rsquo;s commercial heart in Admiralty, Island Shangri-La Hong Kong offers a different pace: an urban retreat that rises above the bustle.
Since opening in 1991, the hotel has been a popular destination for celebrations, getaways and family gatherings. Its recent multi-year, multi-phase renovation, completed in 2024, refreshes and refines the space further. The update brings a more contemporary feel while holding on to what makes the hotel familiar &mdash; a sense of comfort and understated luxury that feels distinctly Asian in spirit.
Art of Living
Featuring 544 rooms that encompass both original and refurbished designs, alongside suites such as the themed family rooms &mdash; which both children and parents will love &mdash; and the magnificent Shangri-La Suite spanning 222 sqm, the hotel truly caters to all kinds of travellers.
But to make our stay in Hong Kong extra special, we checked into the Hong Kong Suite. &ldquo;There is only one Hong Kong Suite, because there is only one Hong Kong,&rdquo; as the hotel puts it.
Located on the 50th floor, the Hong Kong Suite opens up to sweeping views across Victoria Harbour and the skyline beyond. Step into the 130-sqm space and we were immediately taken by its contemporary interiors, beginning with the full-wall mural in the living room that depicts Hong Kong&rsquo;s early days as a fishing village.

The bedroom leans into a softer, more restful mood. Still guided by feng shui elements, the artwork draws inspiration from the greenery of Victoria Peak and the Botanical Gardens. In the adjoining dressing room, motifs of pine trees and clouds reference ideas of longevity and prosperity. As they say, it&rsquo;s all in the details, and here, these thoughtful touches add meaning without ever feeling overdone.

One of our favourite spaces is the bathroom, designed as a place to truly unwind. Finished in white marble, the round bathtub sits beneath a softly lit golden ceiling and is framed by delicate mosaic details that evoke a luxurious, spa-like experience. Beside it are twin rain showers and a heated bench, turning everyday routines into something more considered.
Evenings were best spent in the comfort of the suite, unwinding over cocktails and light bites, making full use of the in-room pantry, complete with a fully stocked amenity fridge.

Throughout our stay, our dedicated butler, Gigi, was always on hand to ensure everything was seamlessly taken care of &mdash; whether preparing tea-time treats of egg tarts and milk tea, offering dining recommendations or arranging and serving our in-room breakfast right on time. It&rsquo;s these personal touches that truly elevate the experience.
Art of Relaxing
Beyond the suite, the hotel continues to prioritise ease and comfort, with the Yun Wellness Centre &mdash; part of the recent refurbishment &mdash; leading the way. This serene sanctuary offers a welcome escape from the city&rsquo;s pace, and a spa session here proved to be the perfect finishing touch.

Nearby, the Horizon Club lounge retains a sense of old-school charm, making it an easy spot to pause over tea or wind down in the evening with a quiet drink.
Art of Dining
A great hotel stay is never complete without exceptional dining, and the eight restaurants and bars at Island Shangri-La Hong Kong are a highlight in themselves, spanning both classic and contemporary tastes.
We spent our first night at Restaurant Petrus, the one-Michelin-starred French restaurant, indulging in a refined winter menu paired with panoramic harbour views. Standout dishes included the abalone with pickled cauliflower and abalone liver, as well as the aged duck with blood orange sauce &mdash; both memorable highlights that set the tone for the rest of the stay.
A popular pick throughout the year is the other one-Michelin-starred establishment, Summer Palace. It was fully booked during our visit, but it remains firmly on our list, and we&rsquo;ll certainly be back for a visit.
If the stay begins with a sense of calm, it ends on a thoughtful note. Upon checkout, Gigi handed us some Hong Kong egg waffles as a sweet treat. It was a small gesture, but it definitely left a lasting impression. You know what they say &mdash; experience can&rsquo;t be bought, but at Island Shangri-La Hong Kong, it&rsquo;s one that stays with you long after you leave.
