Themed &ldquo;Memory &amp; Tomorrow,&rdquo; KL Festival is back for its second edition. Here&rsquo;s your guide to experiencing the festival across dance, theatre, music, design and film.

Defined by rich heritage and a modern skyline, Kuala Lumpur moves with its river, people and memories. The city&rsquo;s energy and diversity have long given rise to its creative expressions &mdash; from architecture and art to flavours and performances &mdash; reflecting the many communities who call it home. That very cultural heartbeat inspires KL Festival, which is returning for its second edition this year in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.<o:p></o:p>
From May 6 to 31, the festival will take over Downtown KL, with more than 80 multidisciplinary events and activations across historic sites, theatres, galleries and public spaces. Homegrown artists, international partners and community groups will come together to present live performances, contemporary art installations, heritage tours, workshops and family programmes, inviting both locals and visitors to experience KL in the most unforgettable way possible.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

LET&rsquo;S DANCE
KL Festival opens on a high note with Joget Bersama-sama on May 9, turning Jalan Raja into an open-air dance floor for whoever wants to join the fun. The nostalgic rhythm continues at the Ronggeng Kuala Lumpur Exhibition, an exploration of the revival of Ronggeng as a living, multicultural heritage led by Nusantara Performing Arts Research Centre (NusPARC). Meanwhile, contemporary performances like Chapter 2 by Pichet Klunchun and Pending by January Low give an introspective look at how tradition, identity and the digital age can shape our movement. <o:p></o:p>

CURTAINS UP<o:p></o:p>
Spanning documentary, traditional puppetry and solo performances, this year&rsquo;s lineup showcases the many ways stories can come to life on stage. In Origin of a Tale, actor-sculptors bring audiences back to the earliest form of storytelling using clay, sound and movement. Fragments of Tuah, a time-travelling documentary featuring original songs and music, revisits the life and legacy of Hang Tuah, the 15th-century warrior whose myth and memory continue to inspire Malaysian storytellers. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>Under the moonlight at Dataran Merdeka, Wayang Women puts a whimsical spin on ghostly folklores as musicians from across Southeast Asia and the Netherlands create a sonic world fusing traditional instruments with electronic beats. Productions like Siapa Cacat?, I'm OKay, yoU?, The Lessons of Silence, and The Storyteller: Oi-Jia, on the other hand, focus on intimate storytelling, exploring questions of identity and belonging.<o:p></o:p>

SOUND AND MELODY<o:p></o:p>
Irama Pusaka - Akar Tradisi, Nadir Baharu is a two-night celebration of Malaysia&rsquo;s rich and diverse musical heritage, led by Orkestra Kuala Lumpur. The 70-member orchestra will take the audience on a journey from classical masterpieces to popular hits and even video game tracks. Joining them are master musicians and ensembles from across the country, including Gangsapura, Rubber Lee Chinese Orchestra, Indian classical artists and Bornean musicians, who bring their traditions to the stage. <o:p></o:p>

SEE AND WONDER
KL Festival 2026 puts art and design in the spotlight across the city. At&nbsp;Lokawarna, visitors are able to discover unique artworks and join hands-on workshops, while Photo Fest &ndash; My KL encourages visual storytellers to get inspired by the streets, capture moments and document the city from their own perspectives. Warung Teranglights up downtown laneways with projection mapping inspired by Pasar, the dynamic marketplace where cultures, trade and communities come together. <o:p></o:p>
Elsewhere at Jalan TAR, PolaTAR celebrates fashion as living memory, connecting fashion students with local artisans to document and carry forward time-honoured skills &mdash; from measuring to starching and repairing &mdash; creating not just garments but living memory. And finally, The Everyday Moments &ndash; City Art Pavilions sees architect-artists duos dream up limited-time pavilions that evoke memories, inspire creativity and rethink the possibilities of city life.

FIRST TAKE<o:p></o:p>
Named after the Tamil expression for wanderer and migrant, Naadodi Film Festival is set to make its debut during KL Festival 2026. The two-day programme presents a curation of 16 Tamil films from Canada, France, Denmark, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Guyana, India and Malaysia, giving a glimpse into the lives of Tamils living away from home. Each screening is followed by a pre-recorded Q&amp;A with the filmmakers, where they share emotions and the creative process behind the scenes. <o:p></o:p>
And beyond Film, Naadodi Film Festival is also committed to bringing together Malaysian Tamil artists across music, literature and fine art. This year, the Malaysian Indian Identity in Music forum gives artists a platform to express and reflect on their evolving cultural identity. <o:p></o:p>
