Demna turned Gucci&rsquo;s Cruise Collection into a Times Square takeover, recasting the city&rsquo;s most familiar uniforms through a glossy, pragmatic, unmistakably Gucci lens.

To shut down Times Square for a fashion show is somewhat unheard of. But today, Gucci made a fantasy of the iconic New York crosswalk with GucciCore &mdash; Demna&rsquo;s latest outing for the storied House. It is a fitting homecoming, too: Gucci opened its first store outside Italy in New York in 1953, and the city&rsquo;s relentless energy became both setting and subject for a collection that was presented as a study in &ldquo;everyday&rdquo; style, filtered through the House&rsquo;s visual language.&nbsp;

The show&rsquo;s title makes its own point. GucciCore is less about a seasonal mood than a wardrobe thesis: a permanent core of clothes meant to read as practical, wearable, and distinctly Gucci. The House described it as a collection distilled from New York itself. In other words, this was Demna translating the brand&rsquo;s codes into an idea of continuity rather than novelty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

That sense of New York as a style pluralism ran through the clothes. Gucci framed the collection as a cross-section of the city, from Madison Avenue to Brooklyn, SoHo to Harlem, with stockbrokers in pinstripes, ladies who lunch in shearling, skaters in slouchy denim, and philanthropists in gowns and pantsuits all folded into one cast of characters. The result felt like a city wardrobe assembled from instinct rather than aspiration, even as it remained unmistakably polished.&nbsp;

Silhouettes were sexed up and streamlined: waist-hugging Wall Street suiting, low-slung denim with a lacquered finish, and faux-fur trims and coats that nodded to the kind of Manhattan women who brunch with authority. There was also a push and pull between utility and indulgence &mdash; reversible technical coats on one hand, plush duvet stoles and monogrammed fabrics on the other &mdash; while the Web stripe and Horsebit slipped into new forms, from a bandeau top to severe heeled boots.

That is Demna&rsquo;s quiet trick at Gucci: he rarely asks for attention in an obvious way, but he knows how to make clothes feel lived-in, then suddenly, devastatingly glamorous. The pre-show montage of fake and real Gucci &ldquo;products&rdquo; extended the joke into lifestyle territory &mdash; Gucci Life, Gucci Gym, Gucci Underwear, even Gucci Pets &mdash; before the runway sharpened into something more concrete and seductive. And when the collection went big, it really went big: Candice Swanepoel in vivid red, Cindy Crawford closing the show with feathered drama, and a front row that only amplified the spectacle.&nbsp;
