What inspired you to start your own performance hydration drink brand?
As a CEO, I&rsquo;ve always been obsessed with growth both personally and professionally. In my late 20s, I started to realise that ambition alone isn&rsquo;t enough. With long working hours and high-intensity training, I struggled with fatigue, slow recovery and declining focus. That&rsquo;s when I noticed many global high performers, founders, athletes and executives leaning into bio-hacking, recovery optimisation and longevity rituals. That shift inspired me to create Upbound: a functional performance brand built to support people who demand more from themselves every single day.
Was there a personal experience or turning point that ultimately led you to create Upbound?
Yes. I realised I wasn&rsquo;t alone. Many ambitious people struggle not because they lack discipline or drive, but because their recovery is poor. Upbound was born from that insight: performance isn&rsquo;t just about pushing harder. It&rsquo;s about recovering smarter.
The hydration space is highly saturated. When you first began developing Upbound, what gap did you feel was missing in the market?
Most &ldquo;energy drinks&rdquo; on the market rely on cheap sugar and excessive caffeine. They provide short-term stimulation but often compromise recovery, focus and long-term health. I felt there was a gap for a clean, performance-driven hydration solution, something designed not to spike energy, but to support sustainable performance.

Why the name Upbound?&nbsp;
Upbound represents upward and forward movement. Life is chaotic. Ups and downs are inevitable. But we believe that no matter what happens, you always have a choice to rebound, recalibrate and move forward. Upbound is designed to be a performance companion for that journey.

We carefully curated 12 functional ingredients, including NMN, CoQ10, L-theanine and essential electrolytes, to support daily recovery, mental clarity and sustained performance. Each ingredient was selected with intention. No fillers, just function.
As consumers become increasingly mindful of sugar content and artificial ingredients, how does Upbound address these concerns?
Upbound is zero sugar, zero caffeine and calorie-free. We designed it for people who want performance without compromise, no crashes, no artificial stimulation, no unnecessary additives.
Upbound positions itself as a performance hydration drink. What does &ldquo;performance&rdquo; mean to you beyond sport and athleticism?
Everyone defines success differently. But every version of success requires effort. Performance isn&rsquo;t just about sport. It&rsquo;s about showing up fully in your work, your family, your health and your goals. Luck alone doesn&rsquo;t get you there. Consistent effort does.

What kind of community or lifestyle do you hope to build around the Upbound brand?
We&rsquo;re building a community of everyday athletes. These are people with demanding professional lives who still prioritise fitness, discipline and self-improvement. Many of them compete not because they have to, but because they choose to. That mindset is what defines Upbound.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in bringing Upbound from concept to market, particularly within the Malaysian landscape?
We live in a world where people want to understand everything in seven seconds. Educating consumers on why Upbound matters beyond being &ldquo;just another drink&rdquo;, is our biggest challenge. The question we constantly ask is: how do we communicate performance, recovery and longevity simply, honestly and effectively?
Aside from founding Upbound, you&rsquo;re also the CEO of Emax Beaut&eacute;. Do you see a connection between beauty and performance hydration?
At Emax, our vision has always been to build a holistic wellness ecosystem where beauty, wellness and fitness are interconnected. Performance hydration is simply another pillar of that philosophy.
Looking ahead, what&rsquo;s next for Upbound? Will there be new flavours, expanded categories or more?
The pipeline is exciting, but I strongly believe in less is more. Instead of chasing flavours, we&rsquo;re focused on functional expansion building solutions that genuinely enhance performance and recovery.
How do you see the hydration and functional beverage space evolving over the next few years?
The world is demanding more from us every day. People will increasingly optimise not just how they work or train, but what they consume. Hydration will shift from basic replenishment to intentional performance support.
Finally, what&rsquo;s one common misconception about hydration that you&rsquo;d love to debunk?
Without the right minerals and functional support, water alone doesn&rsquo;t optimise recovery or performance. True hydration is about absorption, balance and function, not volume.
