No reinvention required.

Some people stage elaborate declarations of reinvention. Tia Lee is not among them.
 &ldquo;That moment felt calm and clear,&rdquo; she says, recalling the day she stopped living for the expectations of other people. There were no fireworks or manifesto, just a realisation: chasing approval was no longer worth the effort. Now she is in control and content with where she stands. The old indignities still surface &ndash; being misunderstood, overlooked, compared &ndash; but she meets them differently. She observes, waits, then decides her approach.&nbsp;
 What might strike you is that Lee doesn&rsquo;t perform authenticity for an audience. When someone remarks on her polished and refined appearance, she laughs. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t believe there is such a thing as a completely natural self, untouched by influence.&rdquo; She suggests the point is not to discover a hidden true self but to understand and appreciate who you are becoming. Here she is, dressed to the nines, ready for whatever the world throws at her.

Moving between music and fashion, how do the two worlds bring out different sides of you?
I feel that both music and fashion give me the freedom to express different sides of myself. It&rsquo;s like light hitting from different angles, revealing different contours in the same person. In music, I might be more emotional, instinctive, even vulnerable. In fashion, I can be sharper, more controlled, more intentional.

You have played with the idea of the &ldquo;princess&rdquo; in a way that feels darker, smarter and more self-aware. What does that word mean to you now?
I see the idea of &ldquo;princess&rdquo; more as an extension of self-worth. A princess can symbolise being cared for, relied upon and needed. But a true sense of being a &ldquo;princess&rdquo; is not about staying inside a comfort zone. It&rsquo;s about having the freedom to choose whether to leave it or not. It&rsquo;s something you carry with you. You step beyond your comfort zone, you try things out, but you are not defined by whether you succeed. Not fitting in does not mean you are lacking. It simply means you have chosen to explore more possibilities. Even when you step away from the familiar, you can still maintain your own perspective.

#EmpowerHer has reached people across the world, but on a personal level, what has supporting other women taught you?
I don&rsquo;t think a woman has to become tough or so independent that she no longer needs anyone. It is more about having choice, like the idea of a princess we talked about earlier. You can choose to be soft, but not because it is expected of you. You can allow yourself to be cared for without it meaning you lack capability. You can hold on to your style while still refusing to let others define you.

Surrounded by spotlights, where do you feel most like yourself?
I think I feel closest to myself in moments without an audience. When I&rsquo;m doing something, I&rsquo;m not watching how I appear. I focus on my own feelings and do not worry about others' opinions or judge myself.
When I&rsquo;m fully absorbed, I lose track of time. And after it is done, I do not ask whether I did well. It is more a sense of: &ldquo;This feels like something I would naturally do.&rdquo; Those moments where life does not require effort or performance are probably when I am closest to who I am.

Are there parts of yourself you feel people have not fully seen, which you wish they have?
In the entertainment industry, not every side of you is meant to be seen by everyone. I tend to be more introverted, so even when I am affected, I often act like I am fine. There are moments of fear, unease and exhaustion. And in those moments, you hope there are a few people who can hold you, rather than dismiss you. I can carry my vulnerability, but if someone is able to truly understand me, that feels like a real gift.

Fashion has clearly been a big part of your public life. Has getting dressed ever helped you understand yourself better, not as a star, but as a woman?
I feel that dressing is often more honest than describing yourself. What you like is not just what you say but also what you actually wear. You might think you are drawn to a certain style, but when you look into your wardrobe, you realise the pieces you reach for again and again are usually the ones that make you feel most at ease.
Your choices shift with your mood. When you feel good, you might dress in brighter tones. When you are tired, you tend to wear something simpler or more comforting, with a stronger sense of protection. In a way, dressing becomes a way of translating emotion, or even how you want to be understood. Reading yourself through the language of clothes can be quite fascinating.

You have built a career in an industry that often expects women to stay in one lane. Have you ever felt pressure to be easier to define?
I think one of the pressures women often face when building a career is being constantly simplified and placed into fixed expectations that are already there before you even speak.
At times, emotions and attitude get amplified. You can have strong opinions without being considered emotional. You express dissatisfaction, but it gets interpreted as being difficult to communicate with. Emotion often ends up being louder than what is actually being said.
There is also the quiet pressure of having to manage how you come across, as if emotional control itself becomes part of the job. Sometimes, the environment tends to flatten women into a single role. In those moments, the biggest pressure is not the work itself but whether you are even allowed to be considered a multi-dimensional person.
These simplifications are how society quickly categorises you. They are easy-to-read labels, but they remove all the nuances. They often come from people projecting what they expect onto women, rather than seeing who you really are, which can lead to misunderstandings and misrepresentations of individual identities. For me, what matters most is defining how I want to be seen. Using visuals to shape music, music to build style, and style to form identity.

When people think of Tia Lee, they see glamour and confidence. What is something people often assume about you that is completely wrong?
I&rsquo;m not someone who naturally feels very confident, and my romantic life is quieter than people might assume. I often feel a sense of inadequacy in many ways.
For me, confidence is something I&rsquo;ve got to practice and build over time. It takes effort to remind myself that I am already doing well. This process of almost convincing myself might not sound entirely healthy, but it is the way I have learned to find some sense of confidence and stability.
