55-year old fashion designer Kate Spade has recently passed away inside her New York City apartment at the age of 55, as reported by TMZ.

Best known for her iconic handbag, the Sam, released in the 1990s, Kate Spade is one of the most celebrated designers in the American fashion industry and she was found in an apparent suicide, having dealt with long-term depression.

After graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in journalism in the '80s, Kate began her journey working in the accessories department of savvy chic magazine Mademoiselle, where she later became Senior Fashion Editor/Head of Accessories.

While at Mademoiselle, she felt that handbags lacked sensibility and style, which inspired her to leave and launch her own brand in 1993 with her husband Andy Spade.

Since launching her own brand, Kate has found success in creating iconic bags over the past two decades and right now, the brand Kate Spade New York is owned by Tapestry, Inc.

In light of her passing, our thoughts are with Kate's family at this time.  R.I.P. Kate, you are missed.
