Set to receive his knighthood in 2019, Ralph Lauren, founder and creator of the eponymous brand, will be receive the title of Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
And he is the first ever American fashion designer to be the Queen's knight and will join the ranks of his fellow compatriots Ronald Reagan, Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates.
For more than 50 years, the Ralph Lauren brand has been responsible for redefining the American style through a bourgeois and preppy aesthetic. The British crown has therefore chosen to honour its creator for his contributions to Anglo-Saxon culture and for his support of research for the fight against cancer.
Antony Phillipson, British consul general to New York and Her Majesty’s trade commissioner for North America says in a statement:
“I warmly congratulate Ralph Lauren on this award that recognizes these efforts and achievements over the past 50 years. In his storied career in fashion, business, and philanthropy, Mr Lauren has played a key role in forging transatlantic cultural and economic connections. As creator and visionary of the Ralph Lauren brand worldwide, Mr Lauren has been a vanguard for the global fashion industry and American style for nearly half a century. In addition, monumental philanthropic efforts, especially in the realm of public health, cancer research and treatment in both the U.S. and the U.K., have led to benefits felt by citizens around the world.”
