Kim Jones nods to the functionality of outdoor clothing.&nbsp;

Keeping up the momentum from the winter season, the Dior Men's Spring/Summer 2023 collection resumes conversation between the past and the present of the French fashion powerhouse as it celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. In a blooming garden, Kim Jones connected Monsieur Dior&rsquo;s childhood penchant for cultivating the garden at his family house in Granville, Normandy with Charleston in Sussex, the country residence of the Bloomsbury Group artist Duncan Grant, so to put forth a poetically expessive collection of clothes and accessories that are both extravagant and practical, formal and informal. The show even highlighted Jones&rsquo;s appreciation for art that is equivalent to his dedication to fashion.

&ldquo;Granville and Sussex have a similar climate &ndash; the weather, the light, and the garden link one place to the other. For Christian Dior and Duncan Grant, their home, their garden, and their personal environment were essential to their creativity. These meaningful and private spaces were then translated into their work and became public. In this collection, we mix functional and natural elements, such as gardening, with stylised and luxurious aspects of the new look, and with Duncan Grant&rsquo;s artworks. The private and the public come together. There are notions like the passing of time, the changing skies, and the seasons&rsquo; light, as well as the ideas of continuity, artistic communities, and the heritage of the House of Dior,&rdquo; Jones shares in the press notes. Known for his penchant for travelling, trekking and living outdoors, the inspiration felt natural to Jones.

As the soft warm light hit the runway, models emerged in clothing dominated by airy colours that reflected their natural environment, from the gradation of Dior greys, pinks and pastels to the utilitarian outdoor shades of greens and blues. The collection featured cashmere, double-breasted tailored coats teamed with tailored shorts in Thirties fabrications and accompanied by built-in turned-down waistbands and walking shoes. Additionally, there are also double-layer shorts, backpacks, zippy camo-jackets, as well as pergola hats, designed by Stephen Jones Milliner, where some of which were made using a 3D printer.&nbsp;

The new bar jackets retained the traditional masculine construction; duster coats were nonchalantly slung over tech-reflective gilets; a new form of camouflage on reflective tech fabric and traditional needlepoint, inspired by&nbsp;Duncan Grant&rsquo;s Lily Pond Screen, can be spotted while the artist&rsquo;s other sketches &ndash; especially those that showcased rich colours,&nbsp;thick distinct brush strokes and emphasis on geometric &ndash; were also translated as intricate yet relaxed hand knits and embroidered on sheer tops.
Since joining the Maison, Jones hasn&rsquo;t stopped revolutionising, and at the same time, revisiting Dior&rsquo;s past in an effort to streamline his menswear collections to become as fun and functional as they can be. In this instance, the creative director associated the life of Christian Dior with that of his own through the English arts, crafts, and literature of the Bloomsbury Group.
